What is equity in poker?
Your equity is the share of the pot that is mathematically yours right now — how often your hand wins if the remaining cards are dealt out. Hold a flush draw on the flop and roughly 35% of the time you finish with the flush, so about 35% of that pot already belongs to you. Equity on its own does not tell you to call. It only matters next to the price you are being offered.
How to calculate equity in your head
Count your outs — the cards that win the hand. Then use the rule of 4 and 2: multiply by 4 with two cards still to come, by 2 with one. Nine flush outs on the flop is roughly 36%; the same draw on the turn is roughly 18%. It is an approximation, and it is accurate to about two points, which is far closer than you need. Equity versus pot odds
The bet tells you how much equity you need. Call 33 to win a pot of 83 and you are getting 2.5 to 1, so you need to win about 28% of the time to break even. Now the two numbers meet: 35% equity against 28% needed is a call, and the same draw facing a pot-sized bet — which needs 33% — is much closer than it feels. Beware the classic error: getting 5 to 1 means you need to be right one time in six, not one in five. The pot odds calculator works out the price for any bet.
Why every bet here is all-in
Because it makes the maths honest. When there are still streets to come, your equity by the river is the wrong number to compare against a bet — you may have to pay again on the turn to see the river, so the real comparison uses one card at a time plus implied odds. An all-in removes the future streets, and equity against price becomes the complete answer. Learn it in this clean form first, then add the complications.
