What is an “out” in poker?
An out is any unseen card that improves your hand to a likely winner. If you hold four cards to a flush, nine cards of that suit remain — so you have nine outs. Counting outs, then turning them into a percentage, tells you how often your draw comes in — the first half of deciding whether a call is profitable (the other half is pot odds).
The rule of 4 and 2
A fast estimate you can do at the table: on the flop (two cards to come), multiply your outs by 4; on the turn (one card to come), multiply by 2. Nine outs on the flop ≈ 36% (the exact figure is ~35%). This calculator shows the exact odds, but the rule gets you close in your head.
Common draws and their outs
- Flush draw (four to a flush):9 outs — ~35% to hit by the river
- Open-ended straight draw:8 outs — ~31% to hit by the river
- Flush draw + open-ender (monster):15 outs — ~54% to hit by the river
- Gutshot (inside straight draw):4 outs — ~16% to hit by the river
- Two overcards:6 outs* — ~24% to hit by the river
*Overcards aren't always clean outs (your opponent may already have you beat), so this tool counts only flush and straight draws — the reliable ones.
